Acyclovir Mechanism
An FDA-approved Acyclovir, which is used for treating viral infections, contains a partial nucleoside structure. Aciclovir is active against most herpes species. Among them are herpes simplex type I and II (sores around the mouth, genital sores), varicella-zoster (chicken pox, herpes zoster), Epstein-Barr virus.

Its mechanism of action is based on the effect it has on viruses. When replicating, the virus treated by Aciclovir produces its DNA not with the help of nucleoside as usual, but using an active form of the drug. As a result, new DNA produced fails to produce DNA further. The efficiency of Acyclovir is further supported by the fact that the cells taken over by the virus tend to absorb acyclovir more actively compared to the norm transforming the substance into its active form.

Acyclovir Usage
Acyclovir decreases itching and pain in the initial stage of herpes infections; it eases its manifestations and reduces the length of the state. In patients with genital herpes the frequency of recurring manifestations is reduced. When used in patients with chicken pox, Aciclovir should be taken in the first 24 hours after the outbreak. In that case it allows to quicken healing, to get the fever down and to make lesions less numbered.
For immuno-compromised patients intravenous injections are recommended typically. The same method of the treating is used with severe cases of genital herpes.
An ointment is used to reduce pain and to control the area of the infection spread in patients with an initial phase of genital herpes.

Acyclovir Dosage and Taking
Acyclovir is taken orally, possibly during eating. For adults the recommended dosage makes 200 mg to 800 mg after each four hours (or five times a day). Intravenous injections are made three times a day during a week.
